Gibberfish Classroom website and Chrome extension · last updated October 10, 2026
Gibberfish Classroom is a homework website for language teachers and their students: teachers assign videos, stories and grammar lessons, and students do them, look up words and review flashcards. This page covers the website at app.gibberfish.app and the Gibberfish Classroom Chrome extension. See also the terms of service.
What we store
- Teacher accounts: name, email address and password (passwords are stored hashed by our database provider, Supabase).
- Student accounts: a username, a display name and a password. Student accounts have no email address. A student account is made either by the student with their teacher's class code, or by their teacher (see Google Classroom below).
- Homework activity: which assignments a student opened, active reading time, how much of an assigned video played, lesson scores, words looked up, and when each was finished.
- Flashcards a student chooses to save, with their translations, and their review history.
- Class ocean game: a student's in-game items, sand dollars and changes to the shared map.
- Subscriptions: for teachers who subscribe, whether their subscription is active, its plan and renewal date, and Stripe's customer ID for them. Card details go to Stripe and never reach us.
Google Classroom
Teachers can choose to import a class list from Google Classroom. Only when a teacher clicks Connect Google Classroom and agrees on Google's own screen, the website asks Google for read-only access to:
- the list of the teacher's active Google Classroom classes (name and section), so they can pick one; and
- the full names of the students in the class they pick.
We do not request students' email addresses, photos, grades, coursework or anything else, and we cannot change anything in Google Classroom.
How it is used: the names are shown to the teacher, who reviews and edits them, and the ones the teacher keeps are used to create Gibberfish Classroom student accounts in that teacher's class. Each new account stores the student's name as its display name. Nothing else from Google is stored: the Google access token lives only in the open browser tab, is never sent to our servers, and is discarded when the page is closed. The class list is never shared with anyone, sold, used for advertising, or used to train AI models.
Gibberfish Classroom's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
A teacher can remove the website's access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
What the extension does on YouTube
On youtube.com the extension checks whether the video you are watching is one your teacher assigned. Only then does it show subtitles and record how much of that video played. It does not record, store or send your viewing history for any other video, your searches, or anything else on YouTube. It does not read your Google or YouTube account.
Services we use
- Supabase stores the accounts and data above.
- Google Cloud Translation: when a student taps a word, that word or phrase, and nothing else, is sent to be translated.
- Supadata: when a teacher assigns a YouTube video, its video ID is sent to fetch the video's subtitles.
- Stripe handles teacher subscription payments.
- Cloudflare serves the website.
Who can see it
A student's activity, scores and flashcards are visible to that student and to the teacher of their class. Nobody else. We don't sell or share data, show ads, or use it for anything but running the class.
Deleting data
A teacher can remove a student from their class at any time. To delete an account and everything attached to it, ask your teacher, or email josiah29reed@gmail.com, and it will be deleted.
